 The diversity of the technology involved in sustainable design, the plan for expansion of the competition to all North Carolina schools, the potential for a national competition and the necessity of fair and independent judging point to the need for the design competition to develop a brand identity. The use of a new brand reflects and respects the collaborative process necessary to carry out this competition and within the management structure now in place. This branding can be initiated with a specific WEB presence and carried out through marketing. Development of a branded WEB presence will allow easy access for administrators and competitors for communication, archive, and administrative functions of the competition. The geographic diversity of the management structure and participating schools demands remote access administrative functions and archives for program support. Online training and certification offers a reliable way to assure technical training is consistent at all competition schools. It also will provide a basis for universal curriculum development, online testing and accreditation that can be approved and managed statewide. Online training and universal curriculum development will allow the competition to expand quickly to new schools as well as assist a national competition. Online training is relatively inexpensive way to provide technical training compared to having multiple training modules delivered to multiple schools as in the recent competition. Online training can be easily modified to allow introduction of new material and new products and innovations.
The North Carolina Sustainable Building Design Competition is a program to engage students in the state's public universities and community colleges to learn and apply the lessons of sustainable development in the design and construction of buildings. The contest includes:
- Passive and future active solar and renewable energy resources
- Energy Efficiency
- Green building products and indoor air quality
- Natural Environment and landscaping
- Hazard resistant design and products
- Universal design
